Brian Mthobisi Maphululo

Artist Mthobisi Maphumulo

Mthobisi Maphumulo, 36, was born at Imfume Mission in KwaZulu-Natal. He is a multimedia artist whose work explores social justice, cultural identity and memory. Initially trained in electrical engineering, he earned an N3 certificate before committing to art.

His art training includes a certificate in visual art from the BAT Centre (2010), Velobala weekend art classes (2011), a mural-making course in Bremen, Germany (2012), a printmaking workshop at the Durban Art Gallery (2013) and a business of art certificate from Curate.A.Space (2015).

Working in oil pastels, monoprint and mural art, Maphumulo engages with the experiences of marginalised communities. He is a founding member and art director of the Amasosha Art Movement, promoting youth and emerging artists. Recent work includes participation in a group exhibition, Confluence, at Galerie Herold in Bremen, and organising a group exhibition, Inkaba, at the Durban Art Gallery. His work is held in collections of the Bertha Foundation, the Durban Art Gallery, the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley and the Art Bank of South Africa, as well as the Debora Patta private collection.
