Artist Pako Lesejane

Pako Lesejane is a Botswana-based landscape and fine art photographer whose practice bridges the natural world with experimental artistic processes. Educated at the National College of Photography in Pretoria and further refined through mentorship at the Martin Osner Gallery in Cape Town, Lesejane brings together technical mastery and an insatiable curiosity for creative exploration.

A passionate traveler and adventurer, Lesejane draws inspiration from the diverse terrains he encounters—transforming these journeys into visual narratives that evoke emotion rather than mere documentation. Over time, his artistic vision has evolved toward fine art photography: a discipline that resists immediacy and rewards the patience of slow, deliberate creation.

Lesejane’s practice transcends traditional photography. His works often begin as photographic prints, which he then transforms through layered interventions—using acrylics, watercolor, sugar overlays, and unconventional chemical substances. His acclaimed piece Rugose Baobab, for instance, achieves its distinctive texture through an experimental treatment with household detergent. At times, he may burn, tear, or chemically alter his prints—each gesture an act of artistic inquiry and transformation.

“For me, fine art photography is not about capturing what the camera sees,” Lesejane explains, “but about rendering what the artist envisions.” His approach invites the viewer to engage with texture, feeling, and interpretation, rather than simply observing a scene. Influenced by the philosophies of pioneering photographers, he embraces a creative freedom that privileges intuition and experimentation over rigid technique.

In some of his compositions, Lesejane employs tools such as Neutral Density filters to manipulate light and motion, guiding the viewer’s eye with intention and precision. The resulting images challenge perception, expanding the possibilities of what photography can be and positioning him as a distinctive voice within Botswana’s contemporary art landscape.

Through his work, Pako Lesejane offers more than images—he shares emotions, processes, and stories. Each piece becomes an invitation to enter a layered, tactile world where photography merges with painting, alchemy, and the imaginative spirit of art itself.
