Alexia Smit is a painter and scholar whose work explores how Cape Town is represented on South African television. Using paint as a research tool, she reinterprets scenes from local dramas to reveal social and spatial inequalities. Her series inspired by Skemerdans portrays a more familiar, working-class cityscape rather than the glossy images often shown on screen. Holding a PhD in Film and Television Studies, she integrates visual research with cultural theory. Smit is currently collaborating with colleagues at the University of Cape Town to produce illustrated zines on South African visual culture.
