apprenticeship programme at Stary Mwaba’s studio from 2006 to 2009.
Manda works predominantly in mixed media and has developed his own mock newspaper style and
techniques of painting that is influenced by the specificity of the Zambian political environment, colonial
experience, traditional culture, history as well as social commentary that is encompassed with satirical
humor.
His work is inspired by artists like Stephen Kapata, Jean-Michel Basquait, Banksy Salvador Dali,
Michelangelo and Diego Rivera. He works with manipulating text, collage and drawing, through developing
complex tableaux of political satirical humor, which become points of conversation and platforms for
investigating issues and ideas rather than delivering prescribed answers. Mapopa creates his own ‘mock
newspaper' paintings and uses these newspapers to turn real local newspaper headlines from the colonial
times to the present into mockery of Zambian politics in relation with societal development.
