Vita Malulu

Artist Vita Malulu

Vita Malulu, born in Kabila village, Magu district, Mwanza, Tanzania, is a multidisciplinary artist working in painting, sculpture, and ceramics. From childhood, he was inspired by his surroundings and the expressive sketches of a local mute herder, which sparked his lifelong passion for visual storytelling. After training at Bagamoyo College of Arts (TASUBA, 2003–2006) and engaging with artist collectives such as Nafasi Art Space and 14+ Artists, Malulu has developed a practice that blends traditional techniques with experimental forms, often using recycled and found materials. His work interrogates social and political realities, highlighting the struggles and resilience of marginalized communities in Tanzania and beyond. Malulu’s art is both a reflection of personal memory and a dialogue with broader society.

Through painting, sculpture, and music, he explores themes of inequality, labor, and the human experience, creating works that resonate locally and internationally. His exhibitions and residencies across Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Sweden, and Norway have further shaped his vision of art as a transformative and communal practice. Today, he continues to produce work that challenges, provokes, and inspires, using creativity to give voice to those often overlooked while fostering engagement and reflection through his installations and performances.
