Al Luke (b. 1981) works and lives in Cape Town as an artist and a creative in the advertising industry. After more than a decade in the industry, Luke started creating more artworks of his own and in 2017 participated in his first group exhibitions and doing privately commissioned mural projects. His paintings are created in an expressive abstract style and he uses mainly marker and spray paint as his primary mediums. “I enjoy the limitless nature of abstraction and that the process and end results are constantly evolving. I also enjoy blurring the lines of what an art medium is. Spray paint is considered a street artist tool. It’s urban and edgy but when placed in the gallery environment, it takes on new meaning.” EDUCATION 2000 – 2002 Diploma in Art & Graphic design Cape Technikon (CPUT) SELECTED EXHIBITIONS 2019 Kwaai Volume 2, Eclectica Contemporary, Cape Town 2019 Speak truth to power - Afrovibes, De Balie, Amsterdam 2019 The Birth of Fire – City of Cape Town Mural Commission 2018 Recline Event - Archive Store PUMA South Africa, Cape Town 2018 Turbine Art Fair with WORLDART, Johannesburg 2018 Mr Price - Blanket Artwork Collaboration, South Africa 2018 The New New Exhibition, Daville Bailie Gallery Johannesburg 2017 Group exhibition, Art It Is, Cape Town 2017 SK8 for GR8 Auction - Red Bull Studios, Cape Town 2017 House of H Mural, Cape Town
