April Kamunde
April Kamunde (b. 1988, Nairobi) is a Kenyan painter whose work reflects intimate meditations on rest, womanhood, and belonging. After seventeen years of commissioned portraiture, she transitioned into full-time studio practice in 2020. Working primarily in oil, Kamunde creates tender, introspective scenes where Black women reclaim softness, time, and presence. Her ongoing series Rest: The Pursuit of Peace and Fabric of Our Being transform the everyday dress, the dera, into a symbol of healing and power. Through delicate brushwork and lush atmospheres, Kamunde paints worlds of renewal and quiet resistance.
