Ben Arnold
Born in 1942 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Arnold enrolled at the Polly Street Art Centre under Cecil Skotnes and was later taught by Sydney Kumalo. In 1981 he converted to Islam. Arnold currently works for his home stuidio in Eldarodo Park after leaving his studio space at the Bag Factory in Newtown, Johannesburg. Much of his work has been orientated around Church commissions: religious orientations, while not explicit in his work, have been a permanent feature of his life.
Arnold works predominantly in sculpture, and has particular interest in clay and terracotta which he uses to communicate forms of an organic nature. His prepatory sketches capture the vibrant movement that will later become realized in three dimensional form.
