Born in 1991 in Rustenburg, North West, South Africa, and now based in Cape Town, Bonolo Helen Chepape is a distinguished multidisciplinary Textile and Surface designer who explores traditional
mark-making as a way of honoring African design through a bold and colorful contemporary visual language.
Her love for different cultures serves as a blueprint, anchoring her as she navigates the currents of life. Her work is a tapestry of cultures, celebrating the echoes and nuances of the similarities shared
across worlds and traditions. Through patterns, shapes, and forms, she seeks harmony and balance —an exploration of how things are, how they were, and the many possibilities that lie ahead. Geometric shapes and forms become her tools for documenting and preserving her cultural background.
Chepape’s work centers around themes of spirituality, womanhood, culture, traditional customs, diversity, and inclusion. Expressed through a graphic style, her bold black lines shape the forms and compositions of each piece. She embraces the complexities of human nature and the beautiful polarities of life—past and present, light and darkness, strength and gentleness, power and surrender, spirituality and love, life and even death.
Much of her inspiration comes from her own lived experiences—growing up with an awareness of both traditional culture and modernity. Having been immersed in a world that continuously
redefines culture, she creates art that reflects this evolving landscape, bridging the past with the present in a way that expands perspectives and deepens connections.
