Dennis Buckland (b. 1999, Cape Town, South Africa) is a multidisciplinary visual artist working between Cape Town and Amsterdam. A 2023 graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Buckland creates evocative video essays, installations, drawings, and performance-based works exploring themes of memory, colonial erasure, and the poetics of landscape.
Notably, their graduation installation, that which the wind intends, interlaces childhood recollections from a family farm in the Bokkeveld mountains with archival stories of the |xam‑ka !au people—raising questions about place, history, and forgotten communities. Their work has been featured internationally at exhibitions including Rietveld Uncut at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Down the Rabbit Hole at Kunst im Tunnel (Düsseldorf). Buckland received an honorary mention in the 2023 Rietveld Review(ed).
