Ehinomen Okoeki is a self-taught Nigerian-based artist born in 1992 in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. He lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria. He earned a BSc in Information Technology from Sikkim Manipal University, India (Ghana Campus) in 2016. In 2017, he interned at the studio of Victor Ehikhamenor, where he explored various forms and mediums of art. This formative experience propelled him to pursue a professional art career shortly afterward.
Okoeki is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is deeply influenced by the cycles of life, particularly as they relate to childhood memories, nostalgia, and ongoing political, sociocultural, and relationship concerns, as well as their decadence. His work explores and interrogates how society, culture, and religion shape human thought and lifestyle.
His early artistic ideals were shaped by photographs and crafts displayed on the walls of his parents’ home, paintings by his uncle—a renowned artist—and images from lifestyle and fashion magazines. He saw himself reflected in these images because they embodied boldness, heroism, beauty, and power. This fascination led him to begin ripping images from magazines and combining them with others. He also experimented with fabrics and various forms of art and craft.
With the advent of the internet, Okoeki expanded his visual archive by collecting digital images that conveyed the same powerful attributes he admired in magazine imagery, thoughtfully piecing them together to further evolve his distinctive artistic language.
