Jean-Claude Nsabimana is an educator, freelance photographer, filmmaker, sculptor, and creative director. He works with sculptures, installations, performances, film, and photography. His work explores political, social, and environmental concerns. Jean Claude holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree with a distinction from the Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT). BA Honours in Visual Communication from the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography and a Baccalaureus Technologiae (BTech) in Photography from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). He is a visual artist and a contemporary storyteller who uses his work as an activism tool to create awareness around alarming social, political, and environmental issues.
Jean Claude’s work has been recognized by a number of institutions for its value. The latest recognition is for his MFA project “lyarara: Loss and Found,” which was nominated by Dr Thabang Monoa from the University of Cape Town (UCT) for the Norval Sovereign African Art Prize. He has also been shortlisted for the Siena Creative Photo Awards 2022 and was the recipient of the Tierney Fellowship 2021/22 and the Adobe Design Achievement Award - Top Talent 2019. As a refugee and a person who comes from a disadvantaged background, he imagines a bright future - a future for himself and many like him. As a visual artist, his future means creating works that create awareness and facilitate the transfer and sharing of knowledge and skills.
