Kate Schärf
Kate Schärf (b.1993, Pietermaritzburg, KZN) is a full-time artist, living and working in Cape Town. She holds a Master’s degree in Visual Art from the University of Stellenbosch, graduating in 2021. She obtained her BA Fine Art degree from the same university in 2018.
Kate focuses exclusively on creating two-dimensional artworks in a variety of media, from printmaking to drawing and painting. She is mostly known for her immersive charcoal drawings, which were a sell-out at her graduate exhibition in 2018 (also known as Grad’EX). She soon began exhibiting in various galleries within the Western Cape.
Plants and gardens are the inspiration behind Kate’s work, in the construction of what she calls ‘foliagescapes’. Her work is an expression of the uplifting, calming and reassuring qualities inherent in nature, therefore attempting to bring contentment and tranquillity to the viewer. By utilising soothing colours in her paintings and constructing harmonious, balanced compositions, Kate endeavours to create art that invites the audience inward in quiet contemplation. Through the constant process of layering and erasure, her work is a manifestation of the love of complexity, a fascination with the intricate, the intertwined, and the interconnectedness of organic structures.
Kate’s artworks have been obtained by various private collectors, and are also in the permanent collection of Ebony Curated. She has exhibited at a number of Western Cape Galleries, such as RK Contemporary (Riebeek Kasteel), Rust-en-Vrede (Durbanville), Art on Avenues (Somerset West), and Mullers Gallery (Cape Town).
She is the guest curator of Entangled at RK Contemporary, a group exhibition on show for the month of April, 2023.
