Keabetsoe Makgoane

Keabetsoe Makgoane
Having started drawing and painting at the age of 5, Makgoane uses the canvas as a tool to access expanded states of consciousness. Keabetsoe Makgoane (b. 11 January 2000) is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in Johannesburg. After completing their matric in 2017, Makgoane had no intentions of furthering their studies. However, during 2018 they bought their first camera and familiarized themselves with technique through photographing friends, family and spaces/places they had travelled to during that period. In 2019, Makgoane was enrolled for the intermediate course in photography at The Market Photo Workshop which is aimed at preparing students for the creative, conceptual, technical and professional demands of photographic practice. Makgoane’s interests reside in various visual mediums, these are; drawing, painting, videography and photography. Their work is quickly noticed for ghastly, obscure scenery or disorientated, oblivious and somewhat naïve characters with exaggerated features and rigid postures. Makgoane channels their concerns about their experience as a queer South African youth dealing with social criticism, politics, human existence and the joy and/or trauma it has bestowed upon them. Through their work Makgoane is interested in engaging and probing themes such as socio-culture, fashion, gender, grief and fantasy, utilizing various mediums to illustrate their curiosity and fascination of the human experience and all other factors encircling the experience.
