Sean McMahon
Sean McMahon (b. 1976), is a South African born artist.
George Monbiot's article 'The age of loneliness is killing us' describes our current information age of social isolation as one that is as potent a cause of death as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and twice as deadly as obesity. My work deals with escapism, isolation and fear.
In his work his subjects are post-industrial and information age in nature. I select subject matter that represent the ascension of scientific endeavours and the role they play in an age that is outpacing the ability of social change causing isolation and fear.
I start the drawings with a mid-tone ink wash from which I am able to create depth with darker ink and bleach. The line work is done with either ball point pen or Rotring pens filled with bleach. After the line work is done I’ll either push backgrounds back by painting darker tones of ink or bleach backgrounds using a brush to contrast the mid-tone interior. I like to play with depth using the permanent and impermanent nature of the media.
