Sello Ronald Letswalo is a South African multimedia artist, born in 1993 in Limpopo. He studied at
Tshwane University of Technology, where he graduated in 2017 with a B-Tech in Fine and Applied Arts.
Letswalo's work explores personal narratives through the use of found materials, such as steel and
the Machangani bag (Chinese bag).
Letswalo's work is heavily influenced by the recycling process, which allows him to reinterpret
disregarded materials and give them new meaning and life. He creates sculptural paintings from
upcycling, where the history of the material and its conditioning play a vital role in portraying his
artistic processes and concepts.
Letswalo's subject matter is dance, ranging from traditional to spiritual to modern. He utilizes
traditional mediums like oil paints on disregarded steel, which require a lot of knowledge and
experience. His aim is to create quality and value from materials found in scrap yards, people's homes,
and the street.
Through his work, Letswalo invites viewers to engage with a wide range of topics, particularly the
history of culture and identity. His use of salvaged materials and industrial treatments adds texture
and visual interest to his pieces, while also highlighting the importance of sustainability and
repurposing. Overall, Letswalo's work is a celebration of the creative possibilities of found materials
and the importance of personal storytelling in art.
Letswalo has exhibited consistently for the past 5 years and throughout his studies. He has exhibited
in several group shows, Art fairs, and competitions nationally and had three international shows,
working with a number of organizations within the arts. He is currently a resident artist at the Spier
Art Trust.
