Slovo Mamphaga

Slovo Mamphaga
Specialising in drawing, painting and print-making, Mamphaga recreates everyday scenes in South Africa as a means to explore his identity and his place in the world, while bringing societal issues, ranging from the spiritual to the political, to the forefront. The artist questions the manner in which our internal and external worlds collide and examines how external factors, when left unchallenged, can shape our sense of self. Simultaneously, Mamphanga reflects on how the individual is able to influence their surroundings in order to affect change. Mamphaga’s surrealistic oeuvre is influenced by the elements of design, largely owing to the artist's design background; however, his work is experimental in nature and tends to be guided by the process of creation. "In an effort to create art that is utilitarian and memorable, my work seeks to find new ways to re-define [the] Afrocentric narrative." - Slovo Mamphaga
