Tinyiko Maluleke is a South African artist and Master Printer originally from Bungeni, Limpopo. A graduate of the prestigious Artist Proof Studio in Johannesburg, where he also taught drawing, Maluleke’s practice is a profound testament to the restorative power of art.
His life and artistic direction were irrevocably altered by a severe car accident that left him with significant language and memory impairments. In the aftermath of this trauma, Maluleke’s ability to create art returned to him even before he could read or write again, becoming his primary tool for processing and healing. This experience is now the central force behind his work.
Many of Maluleke’s portraits are a direct reflection of his journey of overcoming isolation, fear, and alienation. The creative process itself serves as a form of mental therapy. As he states, “My desire for my artwork is to connect and share with other victims who found themselves trapped in difficult life-changing positions and feel like they won't make it out and succeed.” Through his work, he offers a message of hope and resilience.
