Tola Wewe

Artist Tola Wewe

Tola Wewe (b. 1959, Okitipupa) is a Nigerian contemporary artist whose practice is deeply rooted in Yoruba cosmology, symbolism, and visual traditions. His work draws from Ona motifs, folklore, mythology, and spiritual narratives, constructing richly layered compositions that explore the relationship between the visible and invisible worlds, as well as the continuity of cultural memory.

Wewe’s distinctive visual language fuses traditional Yoruba aesthetics with elements of European art history, creating a dynamic interplay between heritage and modernity. Influenced by his formal training at Ile-Ife, his research on Ijaw water spirit masks, and his engagement with traditional Yoruba society, his work reflects a deeply spiritual and philosophical approach. Describing himself as a conduit rather than an author, Wewe positions his practice as a medium through which ancestral forces and unseen entities manifest, inviting viewers into a realm of imaginative and metaphysical exploration.

Wewe holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, 1983) and a Master’s degree in African Visual Arts from the University of Ibadan (1986). After an early stint as a cartoonist, he established an active studio practice in 1991 and has since become one of Nigeria’s leading contemporary artists. He has exhibited extensively both locally and internationally, and his works are held in significant private and public collections. He also previously served as Commissioner for Tourism and Culture in Ondo State.

He currently lives and works in Nigeria.
