Tuli Mekondjo

Tuli Mekondjo

Tuli Mekondjo (b. 1982, Angola) is a self-taught Namibian artist whose powerful mixed-media works explore the complex tapestries of Namibian history, identity, and memory. Working with a unique combination of embroidery, photo transfers, paint, resin, and the symbolic mahangu (millet) grain—a Namibian food staple—Mekondjo delves into colonial and war-time photographic archives to confront and reinterpret the past.

Mekondjo's practice is a poignant act of stitching together past and present, giving voice to histories of change, loss, and the submission experienced by women. In her art, she pays homage to her forebears, celebrating fertility and continuity while simultaneously commenting on gendered struggle, displacement, and the haunting realities of intergenerational trauma. Spirituality has become an increasingly vital element in her practice; she often positions herself in direct dialogue with her ancestors, acknowledging their pain while referencing diverse African folklore. This spiritual and historical exploration extends beyond the canvas, as Mekondjo incorporates performance into her textured and layered artistic language.

A recipient of the prestigious DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program fellowship in 2022, Mekondjo has gained significant international acclaim. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across Namibia, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Europe, and the UK, and is held in multiple international collections. She is represented by Hales Gallery (New York) and Guns & Rain (Johannesburg).
