Vusi Mbulali

Vusi Mbulali is a South African painter celebrated for his unique and expressive portraits. While highly sought after for both family and individual commissions, his most notable work focuses on iconic South African heroes, including Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, and Steve Biko. Mbulali employs abstract techniques to offer a unique interpretation of these famous faces, creating a powerful dialogue between representation and abstraction.

Discovered at the age of 12, Mbulali honed his skills throughout his schooling and early career, exploring everything from book illustration to mural painting. His first solo exhibition was held at the Springs Art Gallery in 2009, where he introduced his innovative abstract portraiture style to overwhelmingly positive reviews. His work gained further acclaim at the 30 30 Contemporary Group Art Exhibition in 2014, receiving praise from esteemed artists like David Koloane.

Mbulali’s work has been featured in numerous high-profile exhibitions, including the OR Tambo Centenary Celebrations in 2017 and shows at the Absa Art Gallery in 2018. A dedicated mentor, he has taught art to students at various schools and libraries and also studied professional printmaking at the renowned Artist Proof Studio. His art is featured in publications such as Lindiwe Mabuza's book Tambo Lenyoka, alongside other prominent artists.
