Wallen Mapondera (b. 1985) is a highly acclaimed contemporary artist from Harare, Zimbabwe, where he continues to live and work. He holds a Masters Degree in Fine Art from Rhodes University in Makhanda, South Africa (2019).
Mapondera’s international prominence was solidified in 2022 when he represented Zimbabwe at the 59th Venice Biennale with the exhibition I did not leave a sign, curated by Fadzai Muchemwa. That same year, he presented a solo exhibition, Chikokoko (Little Pleasures That Count), at Galerie Mitterrand in Paris. His work was also featured in a solo booth with SMAC Gallery at Art Basel OVR: Miami Beach in 2020.
He is the recipient of Zimbabwe’s prestigious National Arts Merit Award (2015) and has completed residencies at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe (2007) and the Vermont Studio Center in the USA (2012), underscoring his significant contribution to the contemporary art landscape.
