Youlendree Appasamy

Youlendree Appasamy

Youlendree Appasamy (pronouns: Youlendree/they/she) is a multi-disciplinary artist and writer based in Johannesburg. Described as a "feminist free radical," their practice spans writing, collage, jewellery-making, and DIY publishing through zines.

Their work, which is deeply observant of the affects and nuances of daily interactions, focuses on several key areas of interest. These include the histories of Indian indentured labour in South Africa, gender dynamics and family-making within South African Indian communities, and oceanic themes. Youlendree holds a BA (Hons) in Political and International Studies from Rhodes University and an MA in Political Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand.

A prominent voice in contemporary discourse, their writing has been featured in numerous publications such as Roads & Kingdoms, Africa is a Country, Mail & Guardian, and Kajal Magazine.

As a community-builder and publisher, Youlendree co-founded the feminist zine-making collective No Sweetness Here with Wairimũ Murĩĩthi in 2020, creating e-zines for the "Making a Feminist Internet: Africa" project. They also served for several years on the editorial board of Ja. Magazine, an award-winning e-zine dedicated to platforming young South African creatives.
