Muffled Violations (2022) is a deeply personal exhibition by Cazylnne Peffer, exploring trauma through an assemblage of found objects and video works. Drawing from Peffer's own experience of acquaintance rape, the exhibition offers a poetic and visceral account of the memories surrounding this painful event. Central to the work are coupled, stained pillowssymbols of vulnerability, intimacy, and violationthat evoke both the body's intimacy and the accumulation of residual trauma.
In Peffers work, objects like hosiery, which absorbs sweat and retains smells, symbolize the way trauma is embedded in the body. The pantyhose, a garment designed for protection, becomes a metaphor for the fragility of consent and the violation of personal boundaries. The piece takes on human form, mirroring the delicate yet penetrable nature of the body, and reflects on the deeply personal and complex nature of trauma and its lasting effects.
