Mulanga Mbedzi

Mulanga Mbedzi is a self-taught visual artist who primarily employs charcoal to create works that explore healing, self awareness and identity. Her work engages with the reality of emotional trauma and how it affects our self-view, worldview and navigation of life. Using the human being as the main subject of her drawings, Mulanga invites the viewer into a conversation about how we face ourselves honestly so that we can reach a point where we see ourselves truly.

Mulanga attained her LLB degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, and her Political and International Relations Honours degree from Rhodes University. Through her education, Mulanga attained a deeper understanding of social ills and a pressing need to alleviate them. It is with this passion for alleviating social ills that Mulanga uses her practice to delve into the root causes of many social ills which she says are encapsulated in one phrase; “hurt people hurt people.”
