Black Box Publishing
Black Box Publishing, also known as Foto | Black Box was founded in 2019 as a form of creative think tank focused on the medium of photography and its relationship to the notion of the narrative. Functioning effectively as a ‘journey’ recorder - i.e ‘black box’ - we track both the visual and conceptual pathways associated with the medium and making of photographs. Consistent with this framework of reference we function as a form of mobile project space whereby we collaborate with invited artists based on a particular project or point of focus. We assist these photographers and lens based artists with the production and presentation of a given curated project which we then exhibit in conjunction with selected galleries and at international art fairs.
Central to our endeavours is a commitment to cultivating a culture of collaboration. To this end we work with selected photographers, print specialists, writers, book makers and designers to produce and publish hand-crafted, limited edition photo box ‘books’ and photographic editions. Committed to excellence it is our aim to present photo projects that are both singularly aesthetic and conceptually engaging. To date we have presented projects at AKAA: Also Known As Africa, Paris (2019); Victor Lope Arte Contemporaneo, Barcelona (2019-2020); Barnard, Cape Town (2020) and the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, Cape Town (2020). Upcoming presentations include Photo London (2020) followed by MIA Photo, Milan (2021).
In 2019 Alastair Whitton’s photo narrative ‘A Foreign Land’ published by Black Box Publishing, that includes an introduction by artist Marlene Dumas and essays by authors Ashraf Jamal and Alexandra Dodd, was added to the Aperture Foundation Library in New York.
