edition ~ verso
edition ~ verso was established in 2015 by master printer Sara-Aimee Verity as both publishing platform and workshop for developing fine art print-works by notable makers from the African continent and abroad. The studio functions as a "sensitive instrument" - part listening practice that interprets and translates artists' ideas into print, and part ongoing inquiry into collaborative experimentation, technical knowledge, and innovative forms of publishing.
Based in Johannesburg, the women-led team includes founder Sara-Aimee Verity (trained under Zhané Warren, with over twenty years' experience), studio manager Megan Rumpelt (BA Fine Arts, Wits), apprentice printmaker Courteney Bentley (recent Wits graduate), and design support from Michaela Verity. This intimate team operates within an ever-shifting home and garden setting that creates focused, contemplative conditions for print production.
The studio offers comprehensive printmaking techniques including intaglio (etching, drypoint, photopolymer gravure), relief work (lino and woodcut), collograph, chine collé, and oil and watercolour monotype. As part of their commitment to material consciousness, they create handmade paper from studio waste, allowing artists to integrate papermaking into their practice.
edition ~ verso has collaborated with distinguished artists including Thenjiwe Nkosi, Gabrielle Goliath, Donna Kukama, Felix Shumba, and Lindokuhle Sobekwa.
Their approach emphasizes long-term relationships, enabling artists to develop comprehensive bodies of printed work at their own pace while exploring print's relationship to their existing practice.
The studio also maintains an active internship programme, training emerging practitioners in both printmaking techniques and broader arts sector professional practice, fostering the next generation of print specialists.
