Lugra Ilunga

Lugra Israel Ilunga (b. 1995, Lubumbashi, DRC) is a Congolese-born, Johannesburg-based mixed-media artist whose work interrogates the complexities of masculinity in modern society. Lugra’s unique perspective is shaped by his experiences as an immigrant in one of Africa’s most dynamic urban centres.

Trained as a mixed-media artist at the Little Artist School Project and as a printmaker at Artist Proof Studios, Lugra combines techniques like drawing with ink and charcoal, collage, and oil pastels. His work challenges traditional narratives while celebrating the diverse dimensions of masculinity.

Central to his practice is the concept of "the outside world"—both as a physical and metaphorical space. Historically seen as a male-dominated sphere of provision and growth, the outside world also represents a space of temptation, corruption, and moral challenge. Lugra explores this duality, depicting masculinity as both evolving and under pressure in a rapidly changing world. Lugra has exhibited in group exhibitions with Little Artist School Project Annual art exhibition presented by Deutsche Bank at JSE Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa; the Society for animal in distress presented by JSE Deutsche Bank at Graham's Fine Art, Johannesburg, South Africa. Johannesburg plays a significant role in his current body of work, symbolizing ambition, cultural diversity, and the pursuit of wealth. Using cityscapes, iconic landmarks, and masculine objects, Lugra crafts visual narratives that explore the struggles, principles, and societal expectations imposed on men.

His work questions and redefines the constructs of masculinity in South African society, acrossAfrica, and globally, opening conversations about its celebration, critique, and transformation. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Lugra holds a law degree from the University of Johannesburg and is passionate about human rights—a theme that informs some of his current and future works.
