Brenda tells the story of a young woman who journeyed to Johannesburg filled with hope, searching for opportunity—but instead found herself swept into the shadows of the city. Surrounded by peer pressure and misguided influences, she was introduced to a world of risk and temptation: drug use, disease, early marriage, and unwanted pregnancy. The painting captures her at a crossroads—torn between innocence, experience, and the difficult path back to herself. The three figures in the piece represent different facets of Brenda's journey: the girl she once was, the one lost in the city's chaos, and the woman she has fought to become. Rendered in expressive strokes of crimson and violet, these overlapping selves suggest a battle between identity and survival.
