Locus Presents Recollections
Recollections brings together the work of Gabrielle Raaff and Layziehound Coka, two artists who embrace the unknown as a central force in their painting practices, using abstraction to explore memory, sensation, and emotion.
For Raaff, painting is a negotiation between control and surrender—her fluid, water-based mediums invite unpredictability, allowing landscapes drawn from photographic references, dreams, and her Lakeside surroundings to transform into imagined, emotionally charged spaces. Her works echo the land and sea, where gestures and impressions carry the weight of personal memory and embodied experience.
In contrast, Layziehound’s process begins from within. Moving away from figuration, he paints what is felt rather than seen—intuitive, emotive terrains shaped by personal history and ongoing introspection. Working in an immersive studio setting, his mark-making becomes a meditative rhythm, translating psychological states into layered, expressive surfaces. His titles - given in Zulu or English - anchor the viewer in shared emotional spaces, while his materials and gestures create open-ended narratives.
Together, in Recollections, Raaff and Layziehound present paintings as emotional landscapes - each work a conversation between the artist and their inner or outer
worlds. Their intuitive approaches offer viewers space to reflect, sense, and connect with the unspoken, where abstraction becomes a shared language of feeling and remembrance.
This show runs from the 21st -25th Maty 2025.
