A tale of migration from the landscape into townships where tradition and culture are gradually diluted and eroded by the prevailing commercial forces of land title. Ancient ways of life and death are fading from living memory generation by generation. This historical analogue silver-based photography project, executed over a 12-year period in and around the Kalahari region of Southern Africa, is ongoing and presents a unique visual narrative.
The photographs are printed on Ethiopian parchment, traditionally used for ancient scrolls, and developed using the 1840s cyanotype chemical recipe. To enhance the tonal range, red bush tea from the region was employed as a toner and are sealed with pure bee’s wax and lavender oil.
The final presentation features steel frames, symbolizing restrained freedoms or windows to the past, you choose.
