Keabetse Maake

Keabetse Maake is a multidisciplinary artist, born and raised in Tembisa, Gauteng, South Africa.

Keabetse practice encompasses a multitude of mediums, including textile art, printmaking, photography, design, and performance. Maake's evocative textile works, celebrated for their vivid colors, detailed patterns, and tactility. Through her yarn paintings, she weaves stories of Black joy and fantasy, drawing inspiration from her own experiences and the cultural milieu of Tembisa.

Maake’s work is characterized by its deep engagement with themes of Black childhood joy, fantasies, and African identity, reflecting a rich cultural heritage and personal narrative. A sense of playfulness and wonder, reflecting the exuberance of youth. Simultaneously, she addresses broader themes of African identity, often using her art to question and celebrate the complexities of her heritage.
