BEYOND THE MIRROR takes inspiration from the ancient Socratic call to “know thy self”, while grounding its narrative in the African philosophy of Ubuntu that emphasises the interconnectedness of community and shared humanity. This fusion of Western and African thought creates a distinctive exhibition that bridges cultures and challenges conventional ideas of identity.
While not self-portraits, the artworks serve as powerful reflections of the artists’ own lives. Patrick Seruwu’s works, influenced by his experiences as a Ugandan living in South Africa during times of xenophobic unrest, portray the resilience of women who helped him navigate feelings of fear and isolation. Steve Maphoso’s pieces reflect his journey toward fatherhood, while Siphamandla Ex uses his art to subvert stereotypes and elevate black identity, drawing on figures from his hometown of Bilanyoni.
This conceptual richness offers a meaningful engagement with contemporary African perspectives on identity and belonging.
