Artist Benson Apha

Apah Benson (b. Warri, Delta State, Nigeria) is a Nigerian visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans photography, poetry, collage, and installation. Working primarily through portraiture, he explores the relationship between identity and environment, examining how social, political, ecological, and spiritual contexts shape contemporary African experience.

Raised in the oil-producing Niger Delta region, Benson’s early exposure to environmental degradation and economic imbalance continues to inform his work. His projects frequently investigate the lingering effects of colonial structures, extractive economies, and cultural transformation within Nigerian communities. While grounded in documentary realities, his practice incorporates conceptual strategies and symbolic construction, creating images that move between realism and metaphor.

Benson’s work has been exhibited internationally at Art Basel Miami, Paris Photo with Kahmann Gallery, Haute Photographie Amsterdam, and Africa Foto Fair in Abidjan. His photographs have received significant recognition, including 1st Prize at the Earth Partner Prize 2025 and the Siena Creative Photo Awards (People Category). He has also been shortlisted for the Kuenyehia Prize for Contemporary Art and named a finalist or semi-finalist for several international art prizes.

In addition to his studio practice, Benson is active in curatorial and institutional work. He is the Founder and Director of Chaos Art Foundation, an initiative supporting emerging and underrepresented African artists through exhibitions, grants, and community-driven programming. He currently serves as Development Associate at the Museum of West African Art, contributing to fundraising strategy, partnerships, and institutional growth.

Benson holds a B.Sc. in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Benin and has participated in professional development programs including the Imọ̀ra Art Intensive with the Guest Artist Space Foundation and workshops at the Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos. Through his practice, Benson positions photography as both documentation and inquiry—an instrument for examining how histories persist within the present.
