‘Mbinga’ has become a sort of colloquialism in Zimbabwe to refer to someone who is wealthy and influential, often in a way that is perceived as mysterious or unscrupulous. The fact that some of these individuals will drive around town throwing cash in the streets suggests a level of ostentatious display of wealth, which can be both impressive and intimidating to onlookers. The phrase "Kunanzwa Mbinga" or "Butt licking Mbinga" implies a sense of sycophancy or obsequiousness towards these wealthy individuals, where people will try to carry favour with them in order to gain access to their wealth or influence. The fact that this can lead to rewards such as a car or business opportunity suggests that there is a level of transactionalism at play, where people are willing to compromise their dignity or values in order to gain material benefits. The lack of industry in Zimbabwe, and how the informal sector and street vendors have become a source of income for many people. This suggests that the traditional economy is not providing enough opportunities for people to make a living, and that people are turning to alternative means of survival.
