ReCurate | Keep Coming Back

ReCurate is excited to present Keep Coming Back by Botswana-based visual artist Karabo Maine.

Keep Coming Back seeks to illuminate the delicate interplay between hope, community, and solitude within the realm of recovery. Through a series of evocative paintings featuring ordinary black plastic chairs, this exhibition delves into the multifaceted journey of healing and self-discovery.

The choice of cheap, plastic chairs as the central motif symbolizes both the mundane and the profound aspects of the recovery process. These chairs, ubiquitous in their presence yet often overlooked in significance, serve as poignant vessels for contemplation and reflection.

Within the context of recovery, these chairs transcend their utilitarian purpose to become potent symbols of rest and healing. They embody a sanctuary, a space where one can pause, breathe, and begin the journey towards restoration. In the absence of a physical body, they speak volumes about the solitude and isolation that often accompany the path to recovery. Yet, paradoxically, they also evoke a sense of community—a shared experience among individuals navigating their own healing processes. The merging of illustrative elements with a painterly aesthetic underscores the fluidity and complexity of this process, inviting viewers to engage with the ongoing narrative of transformation.

Amidst the silence, a powerful mantra emerges: keep coming back. This phrase, echoed throughout the rooms of recovery, serves as a beacon of encouragement and empowerment. It embodies the spirit of perseverance, inviting individuals to actively participate in their own healing journey.

"Through my paintings, I invite viewers to immerse themselves in this duality of presence and absence, solitude and community. The chairs become portals, inviting us to participate in our own recovery journeys—to sit, to reflect, and to embrace the complexities of our healing processes. They remind us that within the quiet solitude of introspection lies the potential for profound transformation and renewal."- Karabo Maine

This show runs from 17th July 2024- 17th August 2024.
